Characterised by dramatic clifftop scenery meeting crystalline waters, the Amalfi Coast boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on the entire Italian peninsula. Many of the towns along the coast are nestled into the rock face, and you’ll often need to navigate scenic footpaths or staircases carved into the cliffs to reach the sea.
Most beaches along this stretch of coastline are pebbly, though there are also some with soft sand. Those seeking vibrant nightlife and entertainment should head for the main beaches at Amalfi or Positano, whilst lovers of water sports should make for Duoglio beach, located just a short distance from Amalfi town centre.
From expansive beaches with full facilities to tiny coves accessible only by sea, the Amalfi Coast promises wonderful stays centred on relaxation. Here’s a guide to the main beaches along the coastline that absolutely shouldn’t be missed.
Close to Amalfi town centre, Marina Grande beach, also known as Spiaggia Grande, is hugely popular with visitors looking to unwind for a few hours after exploring the town. The beach is also home to the pier where ferries depart for other coastal destinations, and this can make it rather busy at times.
The beach is equipped with sun loungers and parasols and comprises sand mixed with small pebbles. Marina Grande isn’t the place for those seeking peace and quiet, but it’s well-known for its numerous bars and restaurants that come alive during the warmer months, making this beach one of the main hubs for nightlife and entertainment.
Duoglio beach lies just over 1 km from Amalfi town centre and is a delightful spot thanks to its clear, crystalline waters. The beach is made up of small pebbles and is equipped with sun loungers, parasols and a restaurant serving excellent fish dishes.
Popular with water sports enthusiasts, Duoglio is reached via a staircase of 400 steps, some of which are quite steep, or you can take one of the boats departing from Amalfi that head directly to this stretch of beach.
Atrani is a small village on the Amalfi Coast that boasts a splendid equipped beach right in front of its charming little piazza. Surrounded by a high rock face, Atrani beach features crystal-clear seawater with a shallow, sandy bottom. These characteristics make it a favourite spot for families with children.
Access to the beach is straightforward and there’s a small car park available, though it fills up early in the morning, so we recommend arriving good and early. Alternatively, Atrani is also accessible on foot from Amalfi via a short and scenic coastal path.
The main beach in Positano is Marina Grande, a 300-metre stretch of sand mixed with pebbles. Facing the enchanting Li Galli islands, the beach has equipped beach clubs as well as a section of free beach.
Marina Grande is renowned for its abundance of restaurants and bars along the waterfront that buzz with activity in the evenings, making it a popular destination for nightlife enthusiasts and various celebrities. There’s also a pier here where boats depart to explore nearby coves that are only accessible by sea.
Arienzo beach is one of the most picturesque spots in Positano, surrounded as it is by sheer cliffs dropping straight to the sea. Also known as the “three hundred steps” beach, Arienzo is accessed via a staircase that offers stunning views over the coast and some of the Amalfi Coast’s most beautiful villas.
The beach comprises mixed pebbles and sand and is a cove where you can spend hours in pure relaxation and peace. Part of the shoreline is equipped with facilities, whilst another section is free beach. Thanks to its excellent position, Arienzo is one of Positano’s beaches that enjoys extended sunshine throughout the day.
Maiori stretches for approximately 1 km and boasts one of the longest sandy beaches along the entire Amalfi Coast. Surrounded by citrus terraces, Maiori beach features fine sand and turquoise waters, making it perfect for families with children.
The beach is equipped with beach clubs but also has free beach areas. Along the waterfront you’ll find several traditional restaurants serving local specialities.
One of the most spectacular beaches on the Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly Furore Fjord, which belongs to the small town of Furore. The fjord, which evokes the dramatic Nordic landscapes, is formed by a deep crevasse in the rock where a tiny beach of around 25 metres sits almost hidden from view.
This small cove is reached via a staircase carved into the rock that begins at a bridge spanning the fjord along the Amalfi Coast road. Every July the Furore Fjord hosts an international high-diving championship with competitors diving from the 28-metre-high bridge above the sea.
Marina di Praia is the small beach of the town of Praiano, bathed in sunshine during the central hours of the day. Marina di Praia is a pebbly beach featuring an ancient seaside tower, built as a defensive structure during the era of Saracen raids.
From Praia beach, small boats take you to the famous Grotta dell’Africana and Grotta del Suppraiano caves, as well as Gavitella beach. Gavitella beach, located in the corresponding cove, can also be reached on foot via a staircase of 413 steps and is the only beach on the Amalfi Coast that remains sunlit until sunset.
Erchie is a hamlet of the town of Maiori and home to one of the Amalfi Coast’s most beautiful beaches, thanks to the remarkable clarity of its waters. Erchie beach stretches for around 200 metres and is one of those rare stretches of coastline where the sun sets particularly late in the afternoon.
Erchie offers both equipped beach areas and free beach sections. Erchie beach is also flanked on either side by two Saracen towers, ancient watchtowers used to spot approaching pirates.
The beach at Marina di Cetara is a small, tranquil stretch of sand located in Cetara, an ancient fishing village on the Amalfi Coast. The town centre with its watchtower and church, featuring a splendid majolica dome, overlooks this beach from above.
Formed following the earthquakes of the 1980s, the beach boasts clear waters and clean seabed, and the sun sets relatively late here in the afternoon. Marina di Cetara has one beach club and several small restaurants serving excellent fresh fish.
