Perched on the Lattari Mountains, Tramonti is a town founded by the ancient Italic Picentini people who built their first settlements on these peaks to escape Roman rule. The name Tramonti originates from its geographical position as a “place between the mountains”, derived from the Latin “Intra Montes”.
The town, part of the Amalfi Coast, serves as the main headquarters of the Mountain Community of the Amalfi Peninsula and was established following the merger of the Mountain Communities of the Sorrento Peninsula with those of the Amalfi Peninsula. Rather than a conventional town, Tramonti is a locality comprising various hamlets scattered across the hills.
Tramonti’s history has long been intertwined with that of the Amalfi Republic, so much so that this small village’s sailors were called “Amalfi Sailors“. Following the fall of the Maritime Republic, Tramonti fell under Norman, Swabian, Angevin and finally Aragonese rule. During hostilities between the Aragonese and Angevins, Amalfi sided with the Angevins whilst Tramonti chose to support Ferdinand I of Aragon, who granted this small village numerous privileges and noble titles for many of its citizens.
The buildings and architectural works of Tramonti bear vivid testament to its history and multicultural past. Tramonti comprises 13 hamlets, also known as “casali”, and each one hosts ancient churches and places of worship often adorned with precious frescoes.
A walk through the village’s various localities reveals not only the numerous churches scattered across the territory (more than 15 in total) but also the castles and fortified structures built in different eras for defensive purposes.
Visiting Tramonti means discovering small inns, trattorias and shops where you can sample local specialities, such as fior di latte cheese, chestnut honey, extra virgin olive oil and wine. Moreover, Tramonti is regarded as the true birthplace of pizza, which has been produced here since medieval times and, according to tradition, it was local Tramonti pizza makers who exported this delicacy throughout Italy.
Santa Maria la Nova Castle was built in 1457 by the Prince of Salerno, Raimondo Orsini, atop the Santa Maria hill. This fortress had a rectangular plan and was defended by high walls with 16 towers.
Within its walls were numerous apartments, stables, arsenals and the church of Santa Maria la Nova. Today we can admire only the remains of the walls, 3 of the 16 towers and the chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
In the hamlet of Gete, whose name derives from De Getis, an ancient local patrician family, stands the parish church dedicated to S. Michael the Archangel. In this area, set within a cave, you can still admire a splendid Rock-Cut Chapel dating to the 13th century. The chapel features a Gothic style with Romanesque details and comprises two naves inside, a larger one on the left and a smaller one on the right. The rock cavity also houses numerous tombs carved into the stone.
Built in the hamlet of Purcara in the 17th century, the Conservatory of Saint Joseph and Saint Teresa was initially established as a training place for girls from wealthy local families. The Conservatory later became a convent complex in the 18th century, and by the 19th century it was converted into a girls’ boarding school.
According to an ancient tradition, it was in this Conservatory that the nuns created the famous local liqueur known as “Concerto”. Concerto is so named because it is composed of a wide variety of herbs such as liquorice, cloves, nutmeg, edelweiss and pennyroyal, which are harmoniously blended together to form this spirit. According to an old local custom, this liqueur is offered to Tramonti’s guests as a sign of hospitality.
The Trail of the 13 Churches is a hiking route immersed in the green landscape of the Amalfi Coast.
This is a circular itinerary that starts and ends at Pucara4 and allows you to visit all of Tramonti’s communities: Novella, Gete, Ponte, Campinola, Trugnano, Corsano, Capitignano, Pietre, Figlino, Ferriera, Paterno Sant’Arcangelo and Sant’Elia. The Trail of the 13 Churches is approximately 14 km long with an elevation gain of around 527 metres and is more of a journey of discovery through this small village and its traditions than a simple hiking excursion.

Tramonti can easily be reached from Naples by car by taking the A3 motorway for approximately 30 km to Angri. Once you exit at Angri, proceed first along the SP2b and then along the SP2a towards Tramonti. For those coming from other parts of the Coastline, take the SS 163 road to the Maiori-Chiunzi junction and then follow the Via Nuova Provinciale Chiunzi/SP2a towards Tramonti for about 7 km.
The nearest railway station is Nocera Inferiore, which is connected to the main Campania cities but is approximately 20 km from Tramonti. From Nocera you can then catch a SITA bus that goes directly to Tramonti.
