A charming fishing village renowned for the quality of its waters and the beauty of its beaches, Acciaroli is one of the most picturesque coastal towns in Cilento. Acciaroli is actually one of two hamlets within the municipality of Pollica, alongside Pioppi, a town situated within the Cilento and Vallo di Diano national park.
The name Acciaroli appears to derive from “lazzarolo”, a shrub similar to hawthorn that was once widespread in this area. The earliest records of the town date back to the mid-12th century, depicting Acciaroli as an important coastal trading centre that, like other settlements along the Campanian coast, was characterised by the presence of numerous watchtowers, of which some traces remain today.
This locality gained worldwide renown thanks to American writer Ernest Hemingway, who first visited the town during the Second World War as a member of the Fifth Army. After the war, between 1950 and 1953, Hemingway undertook a journey through Italy, and among the many towns on his tour, he returned to Acciaroli, where he met a fisherman known as Antonio Masarone, called “u vecchio”, meaning the old man. It is said that this very encounter inspired the American writer to pen his masterpiece The Old Man and the Sea.
Also known as “the pearl of Cilento“, today Acciaroli is a celebrated summer destination attracting visitors thanks to excellent facilities, beautiful beaches and crystal-clear seas that over the years have earned both the “5 Sails” award from Legambiente and the “Blue Flag” from Touring Club.
Acciaroli is home to some of the finest beaches in Cilento, recognised by both Legambiente and Touring Club as well as numerous other awards. To the left of the harbour area you’ll find sandy beaches that are well-equipped and popular with families with children, whilst on the right-hand side there are shingle and pebble beaches.
The Main Beach1 is considered Acciaroli’s principal beach and is an expansive stretch of fine sand accessible on foot from the town centre. This beach, characterised by clear, crystalline and shallow waters, features both equipped areas and free beach sections. Being close to the town centre, it’s one of the busiest beaches with visitors, and its features make it particularly suitable for families with children.
Another highly appealing but lesser-known beach is the Torre Caléo Beach2, named after the Norman tower nearby. Situated between the hamlets of Acciaroli and Pioppi, this beach features stones and rocky outcrops and is characterised by remarkably transparent waters. Torre Caleo is considered one of the quietest and most secluded beaches on this stretch of coast, as it is only accessible via a small footpath.
Also very beautiful is the Pioppi Beach3, which features a seafront promenade of approximately one kilometre lined by a beach of sand mixed with pebbles. The beach is accessible via a lovely and characterful walk along the shore.
Acciaroli’s historic centre dates from the Middle Ages and is considered a genuine gem, characterised by buildings constructed with exposed stone, small shops, colourful houses with flowering balconies and restaurants serving local culinary traditions. This quaint village is easily explored on foot, and from the centre you can easily access the harbour and seafront promenade, where you can enjoy spectacular sunsets.
Located near the town harbour, the Church of the Annunciation is one of the oldest buildings in town, believed to date back to the 12th century. Constructed on a former Roman structure, the church has undergone various restoration works over the years that have given it its present-day appearance, whilst the bell tower was only built in 1926.
Inside, the religious building features a single nave ending with a presbytery containing an altar, ambo and tabernacle. Each year, on the second Sunday in August, a striking procession at sea takes place in Acciaroli in honour of the Annunciation.
Not far from the church are the remains of the Norman Tower of Acciaroli, one of the watchtowers built in Cilento to protect against pirate raids. Constructed in the 12th century by Frederick II, the tower was part of a defensive complex comprising 58 towers distributed along the coast between Agropoli and Sapri. Beyond the town is also the Torre del Caleo, dating from the 16th century, which lends its name to the stunning adjacent beach.
One of the most charming and lively areas in Acciaroli is undoubtedly its tourist harbour, which in recent years has been enhanced with bars, restaurants and lounge bars. From a small fishing village, Acciaroli has become a highly sought-after destination where private boats and luxurious yachts dock during the summer season. During summer evenings, this part of the town becomes one of the busiest and most animated areas. Those who enjoy the nightlife will find numerous evening venues here for entertainment.

Acciaroli, a coastal town in the municipality of Pollica, is easily reached by car via the A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway, exiting at Battipaglia after approximately 70 km. Once exited, take the State Road 18 Tirrenia Inferiore towards Agropoli south, and finally take the SS 267 following signs for Acciaroli.
Those travelling by train from the stations of Naples and Salerno should travel to Agropoli-Castellabate railway station and from there use a local transport bus that reaches Acciaroli in less than an hour. Alternatively, from Naples and other towns in Campania, there are coach services operated by Busitalia Campania that go directly to Acciaroli. In summer, there are also maritime connections from Salerno and nearby ports in Cilento to Acciaroli’s harbour.
