Located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, Marina di Camerota is a seaside hamlet of the municipality of Camerota, an ancient village perched on Monte Bulgheria.
Thanks to its position nestled along the Cilento coast with crystal-clear waters on one side and green hills on the other, Marina di Camerota has become a renowned beach resort that attracts tourists year-round thanks to the quality of its waters, which have been awarded the “Blue Flag” status for many years, and thanks to the natural setting in which it is located.
The origin of the name Camerota derives from an ancient Greek legend according to which Palinuro, the charioteer who was steering Aeneas’s fleet, fell in love with the nymph Kamaraton, who however rejected him cruelly. Because of the ruthlessness of this gesture, Aphrodite transformed the nymph into a rock, which is said to be the mountainous territory upon which Camerota later rose.
Marina di Camerota is famous for its beautiful beaches, some of which are wild and unspoiled, as well as for the numerous caves of karst origin where finds, fossils and bones dating back to the Stone Age have been discovered. Among the most famous is the Cala degli Infreschi, which is located in a protected natural reserve and within which you can also find underwater corals.
The Lentiscelle beach is a sand and pebble beach characterised by clear and crystalline sea waters. There is both a free beach area and an equipped beach area with sunbeds and umbrellas, but the sea bed is fairly high so it is not very suitable for children.
The beach is almost 500 metres long and is surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and Mediterranean scrubland vegetation. Lentiscelle is located near Punta Zancale where the eponymous tower has also been built, which can be reached via a short scenic path.
The Calanca beach is located very close to Marina di Camerota town centre and is hidden between two tall rocky cliffs covered with greenery. The beach is well-equipped and is characterised by light, soft sand and turquoise-coloured sea with shallow, sloping depths. All these features make it an ideal lido for families with children. In the vicinity of this beach there are several caves that can be reached both by swimming and on foot, such as the beautiful Grotta dell’Acqua Dolce.
The Cala Bianca beach is one of the most beautiful bays of the Cilento as it is nestled in the rock and surrounded by plenty of vegetation. The small beach, accessible only by sea or via the Infreschi path, is characterised by white sand and clear, crystalline waters. Cala Bianca beach won the Legambiente award in 2013 as Italy’s most beautiful beach.
The Baia degli Infreschi beach, also known as Porto Infreschi or Cala Infreschi, is located between the coast of Marina di Camerota and that of Scario. This small cove is characterised by small pebbles mixed with sand and a sea with deep waters. Cala degli Infreschi can be reached by sea or on foot via the beautiful Infreschi path. In 2014 the bay won the Legambiente award for Italy’s most beautiful beach.

Located in the southern part of the Cilento, Marina di Camerota is the most populous locality in the municipality of Camerota and has always represented an important outlet to the sea for this city. The ancient history of this area has left traces in the territory of this locality, from the Acropolis of Capo Grosso, where finds from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic eras have been discovered, to the Saracen Towers that represented a defensive and communication apparatus.
In the historic centre of Marina di Camerota you will find the main square, Piazza San Domenico, from which several narrow streets and lanes branch out, full of bars, shops and restaurants. During summer evenings the centre is very lively thanks to the numerous concerts and shows organised here. For the more romantic, a stroll along the pier leading to the small lighthouse of the port is a must, whilst those who enjoy nightlife can have fun in the numerous bars, pubs and lounge bars.
The Castello di Marina, also known as Palazzo Marchesale, was built at the end of the seventeenth century by Orazio Marchese as a summer residence for the family. Over the years, the palazzo passed into the hands of the Orsini family who decided to build the church that is now attached to the complex. Unfortunately, the building is now in a state of abandonment, but the municipality is studying a plan to restructure the property and give it a new look.
The Saracen towers, also known as Telegraph Towers, are structures built around the mid-sixteenth century for defensive purposes. From the towers it was possible to spot the arrival of enemies and communicate it to the population.
These watchtowers were twelve in total but now we can only admire some of these, including Torre dell’Isola, which is located near the Calanca beach, the Torre del Poggio and the Torre Zancale, near the Lentiscelle beach.
Created to promote knowledge of the history of the territory, the Virtual Eco-Museum of the Palaeolithic is located near the port of Marina di Camerota and inside it you will find finds and remains of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age.
The museum features immersive rooms, testimonies and information panels that provide information about prehistoric man in the Cilento (Homo Camerotensis) and the numerous prehistoric caves present in this area.
Within the municipality of Camerota there are several truly panoramic and evocative routes and paths, among which the most famous is undoubtedly the Infreschi trail and the Costa della Masseta. The trail starts from Lentiscelle beach at Marina di Camerota and winds through the Mediterranean scrubland towards Pozzallo beach, which is the first stop of the excursion.
The Infreschi trail allows you to reach three of the most beautiful coves of the Cilento, winners of the most beautiful beach in Italy award, such as Pozzallo beach, Cala Bianca beach and Baia degli Infreschi. The trail is approximately 10 km long for the round trip and is a scenic route suitable for anyone who wants to walk on nature trails.
A much-frequented tourist destination in summer for the beauty of its beaches and its excellent services, Marina di Camerota has excellent tourist infrastructure and a wide choice of accommodation to suit different needs. There are also many holiday villages concentrated here.

Marina di Camerota is located just five kilometres from Camerota town centre and is easily reachable by car from the main cities of Campania. Coming by car from Naples, you can take the A3 motorway (Naples-Salerno-Reggio Calabria) until the Padula – Buonabitacolo exit. After travelling on the State Road 517 towards Sapri, you need to take the Marina di Camerota – Palinuro exit and continue on State Road 18 until Marina di Camerota. As an alternative to the motorway, you can also take the SS 18 Tirrena Inferiore/SR18.
If you arrive by train from Naples or Salerno, you can get off at Centola or Pisciotta-Palinuro station and then take a bus or taxi to Marina di Camerota. During the summer period maritime connections from Salerno (Molo Manfredi) are also available.
