A celebrated city of Magna Graecia, Paestum is a hamlet in the municipality of Capaccio located in the Sele Plain, north of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. This destination is particularly renowned for hosting the Paestum archaeological area, which is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The archaeological site is one of the best-preserved in all of Magna Graecia and features defensive walls 5 metres thick and 7 metres high, extending for a perimeter of almost 5 km.

However, Paestum is not just the perfect destination for a cultural trip – it’s also a locality that boasts magnificent beaches where you can enjoy a seaside break and relaxation. Moreover, this location enjoys a truly strategic position, sitting on one side close to the Cilento Coast, from where maritime connections depart to Positano, Amalfi, Capri and the islands, and on the other side at the beginning of the Amalfi Coast.

The area surrounding Paestum, particularly the Alburni mountains, is instead rich in trekking trails and hiking routes, where you can walk immersed in lush nature and admire stunning landscapes. So if you’re looking for a place to organise a stay that combines culture and relaxation, Paestum is undoubtedly the ideal destination.

Paestum’s beaches

All the beaches along the coastline of Paestum are highly sought-after in summer for their beauty and because they’re situated close to the magnificent temples of the Archaeological Area.

Paestum boasts a coastline stretching over 10 km, washed by crystal-clear seawater with shallow seabeds. The beach is characterised by fine, soft sand and alternates between equipped beach clubs and stretches of free beach. Running parallel to the beach is a beautiful pine forest that provides shaded areas during the hottest hours of the day where you can rest. In this area you’ll also find hotels, campsites and resorts equipped with all the services you need for a stay surrounded by nature yet just a stone’s throw from the beach.

Among the other beautiful shorelines in the town are Villaggio Merola beach, located near the mouth of the Sele, Varolato Beach, a wild and unspoilt stretch of sand, and Foce Acqua dei Ranci beach, a sandy shore with fine granulometry. Also worth mentioning is Licinella – Paestum Tower beach, situated in the namesake coastal resort and characterised by a narrow, long stretch of golden sand and intense blue waters.

Nearby beaches

The mouth of the Sele river and the Sele-Tanagro Nature Reserve separate Paestum from Marina di Eboli, another coastal resort featuring a sandy shoreline with shallow seabeds that slope gently. Here, stretches of free beach alternate with equipped beach clubs, making Marina di Eboli a much-loved beach for families with children.

Other nearby beaches include those of Agropoli, particularly San Marco shoreline, characterised by black volcanic sand, and Cala di San Francesco, a tranquil beach nestled in greenery.
