Along the southern coast of Campania, at the edge of the Cilento National Park, lies the picturesque seaside village of Scario, renowned for its natural beauty and crystalline waters. Scario is a locality within the municipality of San Giovanni a Piro and has become an increasingly sought-after destination in recent years for those seeking days of seaside relaxation. The village has an ancient history, strongly tied to the sea and the traditions of fishermen, so much so that even during Roman times it was an important centre dedicated to maritime and commercial activities.

Over the centuries, thanks to its position, Scario developed into a highly active port which, precisely because of this, suffered numerous raids and pirate invasions from the sea. Today Scario presents itself as an important seaside destination thanks to its splendid beaches that attract Italian and foreign tourists every summer, its crystal-clear sea and welcoming, vibrant climate. Moreover, this charming village has managed to preserve much of its ancient allure and numerous local traditions, becoming a destination of great appeal where time often seems to have stood still.

Scario’s beaches

The Massetta Reserve

Set in the Gulf of Policastro, Scario boasts one of Campania’s finest shorelines, located within the Infreschi marine protected area and the Masseta Coast, dotted with small coves, bays and numerous caves. Near the town harbour lies Scario Beach, the easiest to reach and therefore, especially during peak season weeks, also the busiest.

Much favoured by those who value convenience and facilities, this fully equipped beach served by beach clubs offers various play areas and zones dedicated to sports. Another fascinating stretch at Scario is undoubtedly Resima Beach, a small inlet accessible only by sea, famous for its clear waters and wild landscape that was considered for years one of the most beautiful beaches in Cilento and throughout Italy. From Scario’s harbour, you can take a boat and bring snorkelling equipment to spend hours exploring the stunning seabed of this rich stretch of coastline.

A short distance away lies Spiaggia dei Francesi (French Beach), a hidden cove composed of small pebbles offering a tranquil setting, perfect for those wanting to spend sunny days independently and freely, away from crowds. Another small but very evocative beach is Gabbiani, accessible only by boat and characterised by white pebbles washed by turquoise waters that invite everyone to take relaxing swims.

Furthermore, as already mentioned, Scario also boasts several karst caves and caverns that are wonderful to explore by swimming, such as the Grotta dell’Inferno and the Grotta della Finestra, which contains a small beach inside. It should be noted finally that along the stretch of coast between Scario and Marina di Camerota lies the famous Baia degli Infreschi, a true natural oasis of peace and relaxation. Awarded for years the title of “most beautiful beach in Italy” by Legambiente, Baia degli Infreschi can be reached via trekking along a partly wild path or by boat across the sea.

Where to stay in Scario

Scario is a small but welcoming village that offers various accommodation options to suit all needs and budgets, but it is also a highly sought-after destination in summer, so booking in advance is recommended. Those coming to Scario for a seaside and relaxation break will naturally choose one of the properties along the coast and near the harbour, where you’ll find hotels and resorts offering all comforts and extra services, as well as B&Bs and holiday homes with a more informal atmosphere. Another alternative is to stay inland in areas further from the coast and certainly more peaceful, often surrounded by natural greenery.

Not far from the centre of San Giovanni is the Sanctuary of Maria SS di Pietrasanta, founded by Basilian monks in the 13th century and considered one of the most important Marian sanctuaries in Cilento. Close to the Sanctuary is also the Ciolandrea plateau, also known as the “Belvedere of the four regions” since from there it’s possible to admire, on clearer days, panoramas across Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily.
