Where to stay on Capri

On Capri, even accommodation becomes an expensive pastime. With an extensive choice of magnificent four and five-star hotels, it’s not easy to find budget lodging. Camping is obviously prohibited and bed-and-breakfasts aren’t really a cost-effective alternative either. In any case, wherever you choose to stay, the service will be courteous and efficient.

However, on Capri it’s essential to book well in advance: in summer the hotels are fully booked and in winter many accommodations are closed.

Historic Centre

For those who want to immerse themselves in the glittering Caprese lifestyle and are willing to pay accordingly, the town of Capri offers wonderful dream hotels. The price is influenced by proximity to the Piazzetta and the shopping street, as well as the panoramic location.

The beating heart, the icon of fashionable Capri, the hub around which all island life revolves is known as the Piazzetta, the town’s living room in the shadow of the bell tower. For anyone passing through here, it’s mandatory to sit at one of its cafés to watch the lively comings and goings, but above all to be seen. Everyone passes through here sooner or later to go to the beach, to work, to have breakfast, read the newspapers or to chat.

In the Capri dialect, the Piazzetta is called chiazza, whilst its official name is Piazza Umberto I. The name Piazzetta derives from its small size, a rectangle almost completely covered by café tables.

Overlooking the Piazzetta are the Town Hall, the municipal police office and just a short distance away the funicular railway station.

Marina Grande

It may not be the most enchanting spot on the island, but staying at Marina Grande is very convenient for catching the ferry early in the morning. You’ll find mid-range guesthouses and hotels here with good value for money.

Marina Piccola

Marina Piccola is located on the opposite side of the island from Marina Grande, and in addition to two public beaches and various equipped facilities, you can enjoy a splendid view of the Faraglioni rocks.

Anacapri

Quieter and somewhat less expensive than Capri, Anacapri is an excellent base for exploring the less touristy, western half of the island. The only drawback is the distance from the port. There’s a wide choice of hotels here too.

Anacapri is located in an enchanting position perched above the sea and is reached after driving three kilometres of winding uphill bends. The town boasts the wild side of the island and its historic centre is a place where you can still stroll peacefully through quiet squares and picturesque streets adorned with geraniums and bougainvillea.

Near Piazza Vittoria, there is the chairlift station for reaching the summit of Monte Solaro.

Via Capodimonte is the road that leads to the Museum of Villa San Michele and the belvedere overlooking the Gulf of Naples. From Piazza Vittoria also departs Via Giuseppe Orlandi, the pedestrian street that runs through Anacapri’s historic centre.

Things to see in Anacapri include the Casa Rossa, a villa painted in Pompeian red built in multiple architectural styles, the Church of San Michele, built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries together with the Theresian complex of which it was part, and the Church of Santa Sofia, erected in 1510 to replace the previous parish church of S. Maria di Costantinopoli.
