Getting Around Naples: Transport Guide

Central Naples is easily navigable on foot, but you may occasionally need public transport to get from one part of the city to another. Driving around the city is often inadvisable due to heavy traffic, significant difficulty finding parking, and numerous traffic-restricted zones in the centre.

Using public transport is a practical and economical solution, though the network is run by three separate companies, so you’ll need to pay attention to which operator you’re travelling with and purchase the correct ticket. The local public transport network comprises buses, trams, trolleybuses, the metro and funiculars. Additionally, car-sharing, bike-sharing and electric scooter services are becoming increasingly available. Here’s all the useful information you need to optimise getting around the city.

Metro, funiculars and buses

The main transport operator is ANM (Azienda Napoletana Mobilità), which manages two metro lines (Line 1 and Line 6), the four funiculars (Chiaia, Montesanto, Centrale and Mergellina) and the entire bus service, including trams and trolleybuses. The network is extensive across the city and includes more than 80 lines covering urban, suburban and night routes. It’s worth noting that due to Naples’ traffic congestion, most buses frequently run behind their official schedules.

Naples Metro

A metro network operates in Naples, run by three companies: ANM, EAV and Trenitalia. The metro lines proper are:

• Line 1: the “Metro dell’Arte”, operated by ANM. Connects Piscinola/Scampia to Piazza Garibaldi, passing through the historic centre with world-class artistic stations (Toledo, Dante, Museo, Università). It’s the line most used by tourists. Operating Sunday to Thursday 06:30–23:00 approximately; Friday and Saturday until 01:30.
• Line 6: operated by ANM. Light metro connecting Fuorigrotta to Municipio (reopened in 2024 following modernisation works).
• Line 2: the Passante Ferroviario, operated by Trenitalia. Connects San Giovanni/Barra (east) to Pozzuoli-Solfatara (west), with stops at Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Cavour (interchange with L1), Mergellina and Bagnoli. Operating daily from 05:00 to 23:00 approximately.

Funiculars

The 4 funiculars, all operated by ANM, connect the centre with the hillside areas:

• Centrale (Piazza Fuga – Augusteo): Mon-Tue 07:00–22:30; Wed-Thu-Sun 07:00–00:30; Fri-Sat 07:00–02:00.
• Chiaia (Cimarosa – Parco Margherita)
• Mergellina (Manzoni – Mergellina)
• Montesanto (Morghen – Montesanto)

To reach destinations on the Sorrento Peninsula (Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento), the Phlegrean Islands (Pozzuoli, Cumae) and areas north of Naples, use the EAV railways (Ente Autonomo Volturno): Circumvesuviana, Circumflegrea, Cumana and MetroCampaniaNordEst, with terminals at Piazza Garibaldi (Circumvesuviana) and Montesanto (Cumana and Circumflegrea).

ANM tickets

ANM tickets for buses, trams, trolleybuses and funiculars can be purchased at authorised retail outlets, from automated dispensers in metro stations, via the ANM Go app (the main official app for purchasing and journey planning) or via the UnicoCampania app. At many Line 1 stations, you can also pay contactless with card or smartphone directly at the gates.

ANM tickets come in two types with different prices, introduced with the 2023-2024 regional fare structure:

• Bus, tram, trolleybus and funicular (UrbanoNA1): €1.30 per single journey.
• Metro Lines 1 and 6 (UrbanoNA2): €1.50 per single journey. This ticket is also valid for Circumvesuviana, Cumana, Circumflegrea (EAV) and metro Line 2 (Trenitalia) in Naples’ urban area.

Tickets can also be purchased on board buses using contactless payment systems (Tap&Go). Note that inspectors carry out frequent checks: the fine for fare evasion is €59.00.

ANM passes and special tickets

If you plan to use public transport multiple times a day or for several days, purchasing a pass is more economical. Current passes available (ANM company prices) are:

• Daily ticket: valid for unlimited journeys on all ANM services until 24:00 on the validation day. Cost: €4.50.
• 3-day ticket (integrated): valid for all ANM, EAV and Trenitalia services in Naples’ urban area for 3 consecutive days. Cost: €10.80. Designed especially for tourists, it’s the most economical option for weekend visits.
• Seven-day pass: valid for unlimited journeys on all ANM services for seven days from first validation. Cost: €13.50.
• Monthly pass: valid for unlimited journeys on all ANM services until 24:00 on the last day of the calendar month. Cost: €35.00.
• 10-journey carnet bus/tram/funicular: €11.70 (saves approximately one journey compared to single tickets).
• 10-journey carnet metro (Lines 1 and 6): €13.50.

Tip for tourists: the Campania Artecard (3-day version) already includes integrated public transport. If you have one, don’t buy separate tickets on valid days.

Alibus ticket to/from Naples-Capodichino airport

For those arriving in Naples by air, there’s Alibus, the bus service operated by ANM providing direct connection between Naples International Airport and the city centre, with stops at Central Station (Piazza Garibaldi), the Port (Porta di Massa/Immacolatella) and Molo Beverello (Maritime Station). Tickets can be purchased on board via the ANM Go or myCicero app, from automatic ticket machines in the airport’s Arrivals area, or at authorised retailers.

Alibus ticket costs:

• Alibus single journey: €5.00
• Unico Alibus: €5.00, valid for 90 minutes from first validation. Allows you to make the Alibus journey and, if needed, continue on other UnicoCampania Consortium services in Naples’ urban area.

TIC tickets

Thanks to the TIC ticket (Ticket Integrato Campania), you can travel on all transport services operated by the various local companies (ANM, EAV, Trenitalia) with a single ticket, without needing to buy separate tickets for each operator.

The cost of the TIC Urban Naples ticket, valid for travel within Naples’ area (excluding the Alibus line), is:

• Hourly ticket (90 minutes, integrated multi-operator): €1.80
• Daily integrated ticket: €5.40
• 3-day integrated ticket: €10.80
• Seven-day integrated pass: €16.20

Tourist buses

If you prefer not to, or can’t, explore Naples on foot, you can do so using one of the distinctive tourist buses, usually red, which operate on a hop on-hop off basis and follow a route covering the city’s main tourist areas, allowing passengers to get off and back on at any stop along the route.

Taxis

Another alternative to public transport is using a taxi, a safe and reliable option especially at night. Always use authorised taxis (white ones with “TAXI” written on the roof).

For journeys to and from the airport and to main urban and out-of-town destinations, fixed fares predetermined by Naples’ City Council (2024 fare scale) apply, including all supplements (night rate, holiday rate, luggage, pets) regardless of number of passengers. Always ask for the fixed fare at the start of the journey.

Main fixed urban fares to/from Capodichino airport: Central Station/Historic Centre €21.00; Port/Molo Beverello €24.00; Mergellina €28.50. Out-of-town destinations (Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast) also have fixed fares, which can be found on the Naples City Council website.
