Finding parking in Naples that’s convenient, affordable and safe at the same time isn’t straightforward.
Naples is Italy’s third largest city by population and one of Europe’s most densely populated metropolitan areas. The city centre itself is a dense maze of narrow streets, often cramped with obstacles (badly parked cars, scooters, street vendors, restaurant tables and chairs), and combined with heavy traffic, driving and parking can be quite challenging.
Don’t be discouraged though – driving around Naples and finding safe parking spots won’t be difficult if you follow our advice.
It’s worth noting that Naples has the highest rate of car thefts in Italy. Add to this the presence of numerous unofficial car minders illegally demanding money to watch your vehicle, and you’ll quickly understand why street parking is not recommended, even if you’re lucky enough to find a free spot.
Our advice for a stress-free stay in Naples is to book a private car park before you travel, so all you’ll need to do is enter the car park address into your sat nav, leave your car in trusted hands and enjoy your visit.
The best areas for parking in Naples if you want to explore the city are obviously the city centre and Central Station. Two other places of major interest are the port, from which numerous ferries and cruises depart, and Capodichino Airport.

As throughout Italy, you can also park on the street in Naples in bays marked with blue lines. Parking costs range from €2 to €2.50 per hour, depending on the area, from 8:00 to 24:00. This can be an acceptable option only if you’re stopping for a few hours and you’re certain the area is relatively safe.
There are also ANM private car parks (public transport association) located at various points across the city, which offer more affordable parking rates. For example, at many of these car parks the rate is €1 per hour for the first 4 hours, then drops to 50 cents per hour after that. At many of these car parks you can also leave your car between 21:00 and 06:00 for just €2.
Bear in mind that almost all ANM car parks are not manned (the exception being the one near Castel Nuovo). These car parks are designed more for residents than tourists and have certain limitations: for example, they’re closed on Sundays and public holidays and only season ticket holders can park there. Do check the details carefully before leaving your car.
Finding free parking in Naples isn’t impossible, however in most cases, unless you know the area well, it’s not advisable. Do be aware that you can still find unmarked bays in various parts of the city, but actually managing to park in one is quite a challenge.
