If you’re planning a wonderful trip to explore Campania, you’ll certainly be thinking about where to stay during your holiday. From luxury hotels and intimate bed and breakfasts to rural farmhouses nestled in the countryside and holiday lets, the region caters to all kinds of travellers. However, deciding where to stay among so many remarkable destinations can be tricky.

Is a touring itinerary around the region better, or would you prefer to base yourself in a single city and explore from there? And which city should you choose as your base?

Obviously there’s no single right answer, as everything depends on the type of trip you want to organise and your own needs as a visitor. Whether you’re planning a romantic couples’ getaway or a seaside family holiday, organising a cultural break or an outdoor adventure in Campania, you’ll find the perfect solution.

To help you decide, we’ve put together this guide on where to stay in Campania, dividing the region into four areas: Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Salerno, Cilento and the Islands.

So here’s a guide to help you find the ideal base for your Campania stay!

Which destinations should you consider?

Some prefer to find accommodation in the main cities where amenities are on their doorstep, others favour staying surrounded by countryside, whilst others still opt for a place by the sea.

You could choose to stay in Naples, the regional capital which is home to the international airport, a railway station with high-speed connections to cities across Italy, and a port offering ferries to the islands and various coastal resorts.

Naples is certainly the best choice if you want to visit other places too, such as Caserta, the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, or the Sorrento Peninsula. From the city, numerous buses depart not only for coastal towns but also with sea connections to the Amalfi Coast and the Islands.

Choosing to stay on the Amalfi Coast allows you to experience a truly magical holiday among luxury hotels perched on clifftops, dream beaches, crystal-clear waters and a vibrant social scene.

Salerno is a very popular destination not only for its beautiful beaches and historic centre but also because it’s an excellent base for exploring the Amalfi Coast and other nearby tourist areas.

For an exclusive getaway, you could choose to stay on the island of Capri, whilst Ischia is ideal for spa lovers and Procida for those seeking a peaceful and relaxing break.

Cilento, finally, is a remarkably versatile area that combines archaeological sites, charming villages and splendid seaside resorts with excellent opportunities for hiking and trekking.

Campania's top 10 hotels

Naples

Naples should be the starting point for your Campania adventure. Beyond its numerous attractions, the city has a truly distinctive character that captivates every visitor with its charm and vibrant culture. Whether you’re in Naples for a weekend or a longer holiday, the city is the perfect destination for a stay filled with history, culture and seaside charm.

Thanks to its strategic location and excellent connections by motorway, rail and sea, the city is the ideal base for exploring other areas of the region.

Where to stay in Naples

As a major tourist destination with international appeal, Naples offers a wide range of accommodation options at various price points: from luxury hotels along the seafront to family-run bed and breakfasts, hostels and apartments.

The city’s historic centre is certainly one of the best areas to stay if you want major attractions nearby, such as Piazza del Plebiscito, the Cathedral and Via San Gregorio Armeno. The centre is well connected to the airport by dedicated bus lines or a quick taxi ride.

Those with a generous budget can choose one of the luxury hotels located at Borgo Santa Lucia or along the Lungomare Caracciolo, where you can book rooms with wonderful sea views.

The University of Naples area and the zone around the port, whilst in the city centre, offer accommodation at more budget-friendly prices. For a more exclusive stay, you might consider the Chiaia, Vomero or Posillipo neighbourhoods.

Finally, if you’re using Naples as a base to explore other parts of Campania by car, the best advice is to choose accommodation outside the historic centre to avoid getting stuck in city traffic.

Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast

Known as “the Divine”, the Amalfi Coast is a region of Campania renowned worldwide for its breathtaking scenery, charming towns and stunning beaches.

This truly unique destination is characterised not only by world-famous locations that attract celebrities and entertainment personalities, but also by small villages perched on cliff faces overlooking the sea and fishing villages steeped in ancient history. Thanks to its outstanding historical, artistic and architectural heritage, the Amalfi Coast was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The coast boasts an excellent range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to small but elegant bed and breakfasts. Do bear in mind, however, that this area consists of small villages that are hugely popular during the summer season, so it’s always wise to book well in advance to avoid missing out!

Amalfi and Positano are two glamorous spots on the coast where you’ll find stunning accommodation with breathtaking sea views, though often at premium prices. Quieter towns such as Atrani and Praiano offer a more relaxed atmosphere and are ideal for couples seeking romance and tranquillity. Maiori is particularly popular with families, boasting a long sandy beach and an attractive seafront promenade.

Recommended Hotels in Positano

Positano is one of the most famous towns on the Amalfi Coast. As it’s a village that develops vertically with numerous staircases, navigating it with a pushchair can be challenging.

The old town centre is located in the upper part of the village and requires climbing many steps to reach, but it’s here you’ll find beautiful accommodation with not only all modern comforts and services but also spectacular sea views.

Marina Grande, on the other hand, is the “lower” part of the town; this area offers direct access to the beach and harbour and doesn’t require climbing stairs or steep alleyways. This zone is also home to numerous venues for those who enjoy nightlife.

Recommended Hotels in Amalfi

A truly lively and characterful town, Amalfi was one of Italy’s ancient maritime republics and remains a place of charm that captivates thousands of visitors from around the world.

Located at the heart of the coast, Amalfi is often considered an excellent base for exploring other destinations, as buses connecting all the coastal towns and ferries to Capri depart from here.

During the Renaissance, the town was visited by intellectuals, artists and travellers from across Europe who, enchanted by its history and natural setting, made it a destination for the elite.

Recommended Hotels in Ravello

Less well-known than Amalfi and Positano, Ravello is an inland village characterised by a tranquil, refined and exclusive atmosphere.

Many famous personalities choose Ravello as their holiday destination for relaxation and peaceful surroundings, as the town doesn’t have the hectic atmosphere found in Amalfi and Positano.

Perched at 365 metres altitude, accommodation here offers breathtaking views over the coast and exceptionally high levels of service. Many properties are housed in historic buildings or restored period villas with splendid gardens and wonderful terraces overlooking the landscape.

Recommended Hotels in Atrani

Considered one of Italy’s smallest villages, Atrani is a tiny Amalfi Coast town that has transformed from an obscure fishing village into one of the most beautiful settlements on the peninsula.

Recommended Hotels in Maiori

Maiori is a flat, easy-to-navigate town on the Amalfi Coast, making it very convenient for pushchair users and therefore frequently chosen by families with children or those unable to manage staircases. Maiori is a human-scale town that’s a pleasure to explore on foot, admiring ancient churches, historic buildings and the beautiful San Nicola Castle, a 9th-century fortress at the town’s highest point.

The town boasts an extensive sandy shoreline and an attractive tree-lined seafront promenade perfect for evening walks. The best accommodation is undoubtedly seafront properties offering direct beach access, and several of these provide guests with private beach access, whilst others feature rooms with panoramic sea-view terraces.

Where to Stay in Salerno

The city of Salerno is a key destination to base yourself for a Campania stay. The city not only boasts a truly unique historical and architectural heritage, but also provides easy access to numerous Amalfi Coast locations.

Salerno offers a wide range of accommodation that is often more affordable than surrounding areas, with motorway and rail connections to other cities throughout Campania and Italy. The city port is also particularly important, with ferries to the Campania islands and many Amalfi Coast towns.

Recommended Hotels in Salerno

If you’re visiting Salerno, the best area to stay is undoubtedly the historic centre, from where you can reach the main attractions and seafront on foot.

If you’re using Salerno as a base to explore nearby destinations, we recommend staying outside the city centre, perhaps near the station or port.

Where to Stay in Cilento

Cilento is a remarkably diverse region of Campania, home to charming villages, magnificent beach resorts, archaeological sites and trails for hiking and trekking. The Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and contains exceptional natural and historical assets, including the Santa Maria di Castellabate protected marine area.

Where to stay in Cilento depends on the type of holiday you’re planning, but there’s an excellent range of accommodation including hotels, magnificent resorts, bed and breakfasts and campsites.

Where to Stay in Paestum

Paestum is a hamlet in Capaccio municipality and is famous for hosting a beautiful archaeological park. However, as it sits on the coast, it’s also an ideal destination for those seeking a relaxing beach holiday.

For a cultural stay in Paestum, we recommend choosing accommodation near the archaeological site, whilst for a holiday focused on beaches and relaxation, it’s better to select a property on the coast. Finally, given its location within the Cilento National Park, you also have the option to stay in a farmhouse or bed and breakfast set in the hills where peace and tranquillity reign.

Where to Stay in Castellabate

An ancient medieval settlement, Castellabate is a town that ranks amongst Italy’s “most beautiful villages”. The town centre stands at around 300 metres altitude and features the typical medieval layout with cobbled streets, historic homes and viewpoints offering wonderful views over the coast.

Those visiting Castellabate for a cultural stay can stay in the upper part of the town where the centre and numerous attractions are located, whilst for a beach holiday we recommend staying in the hamlet of Santa Maria di Castellabate, situated right on the Tyrrhenian coast. Santa Maria has numerous beaches of both sand and pebbles, bathed by crystalline waters that have been awarded the Blue Flag designation on multiple occasions.

Where to Stay on the Islands

Ischia, Capri and Procida are the three islands in the Campania region renowned for their stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters and truly unique natural surroundings. Easily reached from Naples thanks to numerous daily connections, especially during the summer season, the islands of Campania are an essential stop during a stay in this region.

Accommodation options on these islands are varied, ranging from luxury hotels to small B&Bs, holiday homes to resorts. Being highly sought-after destinations, these islands attract celebrities and famous personalities from politics and entertainment, including international figures, so accommodation prices can often be quite high. For this reason, if you’re planning a stay here during peak season, it’s important to book your accommodation well in advance.

Where to Stay in Capri

Known as the most glamorous and exclusive of the islands around Naples, Capri was considered a truly special destination even by Roman emperors, who loved building their clifftop villas here overlooking the sea. The island is divided into four areas: Capri, the “in” spot on the island where you’ll find many luxury accommodations, Marina Grande and Marina Piccola, home to the island’s most famous beaches, and Anacapri, a peaceful area where you can find accommodation at more affordable prices, as it’s further from the main tourist areas.

Where to Stay in Ischia

Ischia is an island that attracts visitors not only for its beautiful beaches but also for its numerous spas and thermal centres, which allow you to organise stays focused on relaxation and wellness. The island offers accommodation and facilities to suit all needs and price ranges, but the advice is to book your stay in advance to get the best option for your requirements.

The areas of Ischia Porto and Forio stand out for offering not just numerous accommodation options, bars and restaurants, but also equipped beaches alongside free beaches, making them ideal for families with children. These two areas are also very popular with those seeking nightlife and entertainment, given the high number of venues and evening activities available.

Sant’Angelo, on the other hand, is particularly suited for couples looking for a romantic getaway or anyone wanting a peaceful holiday. Finally, if budget isn’t a concern, you could opt for one of the establishments in Lacco Ameno, which boasts luxury hotels with high-end spas and thermal centres.

Where to Stay in Procida

Considered the wildest of the Campania islands, Procida is a genuine unspoiled “gem” waiting to be discovered. Time seems to stand still here, and the island is best explored at a leisurely pace, wandering through its narrow streets lined with colourful houses and watching locals going about their daily lives.

Procida is not a large island and has a limited number of accommodation options, especially compared to the other two Campania islands, so again it’s advisable to choose where to stay in advance and book your accommodation early.

Marina Grande is certainly the most touristy area of the island, where you’ll find the greatest number of accommodation options as well as restaurants and activities. The ferry terminal is also located here, making it an ideal area for those planning a short stay on the island.

If, however, you have more time available and want to experience the island’s true character, you can choose accommodation in quieter, more inland areas that are less hectic.
